Village de Saint-Amand-de-Coly

To the north of Périgord Noir and Sarlat and a few steps from the Lascaux caves, Saint-Amand-de-Coly is located between two wooded valleys. The first known historical document reporting the existence of a monastery in this village dates from 1048 but the origins of the place could be much earlier. The religious site and the dwellings were built around the hermitage of Amand, a young nobleman of Limousin origin who evangelized the local populations in the middle of the XNUMXth century.
Classified among the most beautiful villages in France, Saint-Amand-de-Coly is therefore renowned for its 12th century abbey church which is among the most beautiful fortified churches in Périgord. Its tall silhouette watches over the houses of the village which, just like it, are made of this Sarladaise stone and these slates typical of the region, in a harmonious contrast of ocher and gray tones.
