Nature (fauna, flora)

Halfway between Lascaux and Les Eyzies, Saint-Léon is in the heart of the “Vallée de l’Homme”. Occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the remains of habitat at the Conquil site, Saint-Léon owes its name to one of the first bishops of Périgueux. Located near a Roman road, this village was above all, until the appearance of the railway, a flourishing port on the Vézère, to the point of deserving the name of Port-Léon under the Revolution. From the expiratory chapel of the cemetery at the eastern entrance to the village, the road leads, beyond the castle of Clérans and the manor of La Salle, to a 12th century Romanesque church, with a lausa roof, the Mecca of the Musical Festival of Périgord Noir.
Starting point “Saint-Léon-Sur-Vézère car park”.
