Village de Coly-Saint-Amand

A stone's throw from the Lascaux cave in Dordogne and 20km from Sarlat, the magnificently restored village of Coly-Saint-Amand is classified as "Most Beautiful Villages of France" (Saint-Amand-de-Coly).

The village has several houses and dovecotes typical of Périgord Noir but above all a majestic 12th century abbey church considered to be the most beautiful fortified church in Périgord.

Gray slates, yellow stones, ochres, the church of the former abbey of Coly-Saint-Amand is the archetype of the fortified sanctuary. From the keep tower housing a defense chamber, to the lookout lodges hidden in the transept, the whole is impressive. The imposing ramparts and numerous defense devices bear witness to the historical importance of this Augustinian abbey, which withstood the tumults of the Hundred Years' War and the wars of religion.
