Site préhistorique de Castel-Merle

The Templar village of Sergeac along the left bank of the Vézère River in the Dordogne, the prehistoric site of Castel-Merle includes ten remarkable rock shelters which were occupied by Neanderthal 85,000 years ago and Cro-Magnon 35,000 years ago. This concentration of deposits, located halfway between the Lascaux caves and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, is one of the most largest in the world. In 2012, the site of Castel-Merle came into the spotlight when American researchers announced that they were able to precisely date an engraved stone block to 37,000 years before the present day. This means that Castel-Merle is home to one of the oldest forms of cave art in Europe and perhaps even the world. After touring the shelters, continue your trip through time to become the hero of Castel-Merle: experiment with a propulsor or reserve a painting or jewellery workshop. Watch as flintstones...
