What is Occitan?

Occitan is also called Oc language. Spoken mainly in the southern third of France, this dialect was democratized by the troubadours in the 11th and 13th centuries.

In Périgord, the Occitan language is sometimes studied in schools. The Dordogne department keeps this language alive through various events including the Félibrée. In the four corners of the department, village entrance signs are written in French and Occitan!

What are the Occitan traditions?

La Félibrée, an Occitan festival, highlights the songs and dances (the rondeau, the Valentinou, the soufflé, etc.) of the Occitan language.

The Occitan Pole of Rouffignac, based at Parc de la Falquette since 2018, runs workshops around traditional Occitan art and crafts. You can learn singing, making lace and traditional costumes.

Meitat chen meitat pòrc : every Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., a program on France Blue Perigord allows listeners to communicate in Occitan.
