What were the wash houses used for?

The creation of wash houses under Napoleon III resulted from a collective awareness of the importance of public health and elementary principles of hygiene: cholera, smallpox, typhoid devastated the 19th century. For eliminate the risk of infection, water has become the subject of increased attention, its purity an imperative. The wash houses that remained in use until the first half of the 20th century had a significant social function. They were rare places where women could meet and discuss, joke, sing. In the past there was at least one wash house per village and we could estimate the importance of a village to the number of wash houses he owned.

The Moustier wash house

Our favorite without a doubt. After crossing a small bridge you will arrive in a romantic little corner of greenery, between flowers, rushes, dragonflies and the sound of water. 

Former washhouse in Saint-Amand-de-Coly

It's about a private property and it is no longer in water. Nevertheless interesting, because built during the second half of the 19th century concomitant with the construction of the Filolie mill. It is therefore a whole set of water management, between the mill, the washhouse and the pond below.

The Lauterie wash house in Farges

This wash house is old, perhaps dating back to the 1812th century, the access path to which appears on the XNUMX land register. There is an old fountain nearby. 

The Thonac washhouse 

Dating from the first half of the 20th century, it adjoins the bridge Thonac which dates back to Middle ages. Bucolic atmosphere guaranteed!
